Speaking at a Capitol Hill press conference commemorating the second anniversary of the Affordable Care Act, Brian England, the President of British American Auto Care, shared how the health care reform law led to a six percent reduction in health insurance costs for his auto repair shop. The press conference, hosted by Democratic Leader, Nancy Pelosi; Democratic Whip, Steny Hoyer; and Assistant Democratic Leader, James E. Clyburn, highlighted working families and small businesses that have benefited from the act.
?We are committed to offering health insurance to our employees, but over the past ten years it has become a real struggle,? Brian noted while speaking at the press conference.
With his daughter, Sandi Weaver, the general manager of British American Auto Care, and his almost two-year-old grandson, Lucas Weaver, at his side, Brian went on to explain that when the Affordable Care Act became law two years ago, he and his wife Jennifer were expecting their auto shop?s health insurance rates to increase twenty to thirty percent. This would have resulted in up to $20,000 in extra expenses. Instead, they were surprised to see their costs decrease by six percent. This decrease helped them avoid having to choose between two difficult options: increasing the labor rate they charge their customers or decreasing the coverage they offer to their employees.
In addition to the insurance cost decrease, British American Auto Care employees were able to get the added benefit of preventive care with no co-payment.
?It?s great that both our employees and our customers benefited from the health care reform law,? Brian later added.
British American Auto Care is committed to offering high quality automotive services. They feel that in order to do this, they need to hire, train, and retain excellent employees. Being able to offer a good employment package that includes health insurance goes a long way toward helping them to achieve that goal. As a result, Brian is fighting to help keep the Affordable Care Act in place. He feels it is essential in helping his family?s business to continue to offer high quality car repairs and services to their customers at a reasonable price.

The UK is currently experiencing a run on fuel after a government minister warned citizens to stock up ahead of a possible strike by British fuel tanker drivers. Despite the fact that a strike is anything but certain, and must also be preceded by a week-long warning period, Britain's Petrol Retailers Association says that gasoline sales are up 81 percent and diesel 43 percent since the comments were made. The average price of fuel there today is £1.40/liter, or $8.49/gallon. Cabinet Minister Francis Maude had originally commented that Britain's drivers should store fuel, "maybe a little bit in the garage as well in a jerrycan." Late Tuesday, Transportation Minister Mike Penning attempted to walk back that comment a bit, stating that Maude had misunderstood the size of a jerrycan (20 liters). Penning, however, still remarked the he supported the advice to keep fuel tanks topped off in case a strike date is set. Lines to purchase fuel today are reportedly so long in places that authorities are ordering some stations to close in order to clear the road congestion. Gasoline containers are also reportedly flying off shelves. The potential strike would involve some 2,000 drivers represented by Unite, the country's largest trade union. The union is negotiating for minimum standards that would cover things like wages, hours and holidays for drivers that deliver fuel to Shell and Esso gas stations, as well as supermarkets. The UK government is defending the ministers' comments as taking appropriate precautions, but other organizations, like Britain's Automobile Association, are blaming the official advice for panic buying that will lead to fuel shortages ahead of a strike that may not even happen.Government warning sparks fuel-buying surge in UK originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 29 Mar 2012 14:30:00 EST. A BRISTOL law firm has raised a massive £7,000 for the West of England Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre in Bradley Stoke.
Irwin Mitchell nominated the centre as its charity of the year as the organisation relies entirely on donations from the public to keep going.
It provides therapy and treatment to people with MS and recently moved into its new £1.13 million facility, from where it will eventually support up to 600 patients every year in Bristol, South Gloucestershire, North Somerset and surrounding areas.
During its year of support, fund- raisers at Irwin Mitchell ran, rowed and raffled their way to their target.
The biggest single money spinner involved a team of 20 taking part in the Bristol Dragon Boat Festival in September, which raised £3,000.
There were numerous raffles and event days, with staff also taking part in the Bristol 10k run and a quiz that involved the Bristol office linking up with the firm's other centres around the country to test their general knowledge.
Irwin Mitchell spokeswoman Deborah Bigwood said: "We have really enjoyed raising funds for a charity that works so hard for the people it supports with MS."
The centre relocated to Bradley Stoke last month after more than ten years of planning.
It had previously been run for more than 25 years in an industrial unit in Nailsea but now people with the neurological condition and those providing it have more space at the new base for therapies and the volunteers who help with administration and fund raising.
There is more room for an oxygen tank and physiotherapy, extra space for people waiting to have therapy and for the first time, the centre can offer exercise classes at the same time as physio.
Raising cash to run the building is a priority but it is also hoped to add services, including getting a second oxygen chamber.
Multiple sclerosis is a degenerative disorder that affects the protective coating surrounding nerves. It's symptoms can range from fatigue and vision problems to muscle spasms, memory problems and difficulty with walking, with an estimated 1,600 people living with MS in the Bristol area.
The centre's Janet Epplestone said: "We are extremely grateful to Irwin Mitchell for all the support we've received.
"At a time when we are settling in to our fantastic new centre, this kind of funding boost is hugely appreciated by everybody at the charity and those who use the centre."
