Missing heirloom returned thanks to chance encounter

A GREAT grandfather has been reunited with his mother's missing locket following a chance meeting with a man who had bought his childhood home in Bedminster. Raymond Trump, 82, was at the Liberal Club in St George when he bumped into a friend of a friend. They got talking and found they were both "Bemmy boys", having both grown up in the Marksbury Road area of Bedminster. The man, who Mr Trump only remembers as being called Mike, told the pensioner he now lived at number 2 Dawlish Road. Mr Trump told the Post: "Hearing that he lived at that address – you could have knocked me down with a feather. "That house was where I grew up and used to live with my mother and siblings. "We had a good chat about Bedminster and the old times, I couldn't believe what a coincidence it was." But the coincidences were about to get even stranger when Mr Trump, who now lives in Thicketts Avenue, Fishponds, met the new owner of his childhood home for a second time at the snooker club. The man approached Mr Trump to ask if he could shed any light on a little silver locket he had dug up when removing an air raid shelter in the garden of his house to make way for a fish pond. Mr Trump opened the locket with great care and was blown away to find a picture of himself as a young boy and his late sister Jean, who sadly passed away aged 48 in 1978. He recalled his mother having a locket around her neck when he was a young child, but did not remember her ever having said she had lost it. Mr Trump told the Post: "I can't really believe all the coincidences that have led to me having possession of the locket again. "To this day the locket has kept its colour and the photographs inside are perfect. During the war when I was a young boy I remember spending lots of time in the air raid shelter with my mother and my brothers and sisters. "She must have lost the locket down there but I never knew. "I left home aged 21 to marry my wife and we settled down in Fishponds with our two daughters Diane and Jane. "I am so pleased to see the locket again and to remember my mother and sister." Mr Trump, who has four grandchildren and six great grandchildren, has since given the locket to his niece Lorraine, 62, who is his late sister's daughter. She is delighted to have such a personal piece of family history and has told her uncle she will treasure the locket. His daughter Diane, 60, was amazed when she heard how her dad had come to be reunited with the locket. "This locket was lost for more than 70 years and would have remained that way had my dad not bumped into this man at his snooker club," said Diane, who lives in Emersons Green. "Unfortunately we are no longer in contact with the man who lives in dad's old house but are so grateful to him for returning this locket to our family. "It has been perfectly preserved underground where the old air raid shelter was this whole time. "It was lovely to see dad as a young boy – we think he is about seven years old in the picture – and his sister Jean, who we think is about ten. "The whole family is just thrilled and we wanted to share this lovely story with everyone."
