Chew Valley to host four-way floodlit cricket tournament

FLOODLIT cricket complete with white balls and coloured clothing is coming to the Chew Valley area on July 20.

Bishop Sutton Football Club is to host a four-team 10/10 competition involving the village's cricket team plus sides from Chew Magna, Harptree and Temple Cloud later this month.

An artificial wicket will be laid at the soccer ground, which will host three matches – two semi-finals and the final.

Games will be ten overs per side, with five bowlers able to send down a maximum of two overs apiece.

The action is due to start at 6.15pm and be completed by around 11pm.

Bishop Sutton football official Steve Hillier said: "The tournament was the idea of our first-team manager Lee Lashenko who is a big supporter of the local community and local sports.

"It's going to be free to come in, and we're hoping to attract a good crowd. We're posting 2,500 leaflets through letter boxes in the four villages, and posters are going up in all the local pubs and shops.

"We know that a lot depends on the weather but we have to have at least one decent night this summer!"

The event is being sponsored by Chew Valley Estates and will also feature live music and a barbecue, and could become part of the annual calendar if successful.

Polly Griffiths compiled the fine figures of 3-11 from eight overs, including four maidens, but still finished on the losing side as Gloucestershire women's under-17s went down by 114 runs away to Sussex at Blackstone CC.

The home side reached 210-8 from their 45 overs, Eve Alder (2-9 from six) and Hannah Cockram (2-43) also making an impression. But Gloucestershire were always on the back foot with the bat, with Cockram (35 not) and Griffiths (16) the only players to reach double figures in an all out reply of 96.

Kevin Sibley (3-13), Rob Watkins (2-9) and Josh Stevenson (2-14) laid the foundations for Dyrham & Hinton's five-wicket win at Chipping Sodbury in the Village League.

Sodbury were bowled out for 125 before opener Dan Brown (41) and Rich Elliott (30) put Dyrham on their way to victory.

Mark Fisher (4-7 from four) and Matt Owen (2-19) bowled Barrow Gurney under-13s to a nine-run home win over Long Ashton in the North Somerset Youth League.

Guy Fisher (30 not out) helped the home side reach 110-2 before the visitors came up short.

Skipper Joe Hance (33 not out) guided Cleeve to a nine-wicket success at Winford, and captain Sam Iles' 20 was crucial in Nailsea's 11-run home success over Congresbury.

Chimps at South African facility maul UTSA student

A UTSA spokeswoman confirmed that anthropology graduate student Andrew F. Oberle, 26, was injured in the attack at the Jane Goodall Institute South Africa Chimpanzee Eden near Nelspruit on Thursday. Oberle, who was reportedly working as a guide, was with a group of tourists near an adult male chimpanzee enclosure when the mauling occurred, said David Oosthuizen, executive director of the institute, in a prepared statement. Witnesses said two male chimpanzees, called Mickey and Amadeus, grabbed Oberle by his feet and pulled him under a perimeter fence and into their enclosure, then dragged him almost a half-mile, according to news reports. The facility, which was temporarily closed to investigate safety protocols after the mauling, houses chimpanzees rescued from illegal pet and bushmeat trades and the entertainment industry, Oosthuizen's statement said. The ones at the sanctuary have already experienced abuse and injury by humans "and therefore have to be treated with caution."

Rickshaw man on a mission

With his faithful mutt Roxy by his side, Stevens set out from his Oceanside, Calif., home Sept. 13, 2009, and headed to Miami, Fla., with one goal in mind: to share God's love along the way. Five years ago, Stevens lost Mary, his beloved wife of 31 years, to pancreatic cancer. [...] while I was on the pier, fishing, people thought I was homeless because I was going through the mourning phase. Ironically, his trip was cut short when he was hit in the back of the head by bottle thrown by some youngsters in a passing car. Stevens was injured and had to return home, but remained determined. In 2008, he and his dog Camouflage Cammy headed out with The Shangri-La once again, this time attempting to break a world record. [...] time's a charm Back in Oceanside, Stevens acquired Roxy, built a new rickshaw and prepared to hit the road again. Since late June, he's been staying in Sugar Land. Stevens carries clothes, a small camping stove, fishing supplies and the like on The Shangri-La; and, of course, Roxy. There's a large sign on the front of Stevens' rickshaw letting folks know he's on a world-record walk, and he sings gospel music along the way, many songs which he penned himself.
